I recently interviewed Mitch Broderick, Winter 2014 Class and James Walpole, Fall 2014 Class, to discuss their Praxis experience, what they’re working on now, and what’s up next. Mitch completed the program in November, 2014 and James will be completing the program this June.
James Walpole is a writer, podcaster, and marketing professional based in Atlanta, Georgia. He currently works with bitcoin payment technology company BitPay and explores the ideas and people behind the decentralization movement with the DECENTRALIZE podcast. He also writes on Medium and blogs here at Praxis. James joined Praxis immediately following graduation from high school.
Mitch Broderick is VP of Business Development at Advantage Media Group in Charleston, SC. He also sells real estate with Re/Max in the Charleston area. He’s a contrarian thinker, holding most dear the single notion that to attain what one wants, one must do more than what they know, but rather, what is required. Mitchell participated in Praxis after completing his freshman year of college.
What are you doing now?
James: I was hired as a full-time member of BitPay’s (my Praxis business partner) marketing team, where I currently involve myself in managing social media, coordinating logistics and material orders, providing resources and documentation for our sales team, and creating written content for our blog and website.
Mitch: At the end of the program, in October, I was not only hired full time, but promoted to VP of Business Development and given a substantial salary and a raise from earning 2% commission to 10% commissions on sales I make. My new responsibility is to prospect for entrepreneurs who should have a book to market themselves, their expertise, and their businesses and bring them through the process of signing a publishing plan. It’s a luxury marketing service with an average price point of $30K, no easy feat.
What was your favorite component of the program?
James: I would have to say that the entrepreneurship module of this curriculum had the most impact on me. It’s really about the possibility and the methods of creative greatness. From studying great founders and doing some introspection in my own work, I’ve found that this kind of greatness takes grit, but that it’s absolutely achievable.
Mitch: Being able to work directly under the founder of my business partner was absolutely amazing. I gained insights into how to run a business that very few people my age get access to. Because I was able to learn about all facets of my company, I had an advantage when pursuing a full-time position with them.
How do you compare Praxis to what you would have done otherwise?
James: I feel that I have saved four years of my life, and I have accomplished more of my personal goals this year than in the past ten. I have actual control of how I am spending my days. It is incredibly freeing to have the responsibility to learn and grow in this way, and I don’t think I would have had anything like this in college.
Mitch: The education Praxis provided in the curriculum, juxtaposed with the real-world education I received from working with Advantage, far exceeded my expectations. The 10 months with Praxis were certainly more valuable to me than the year I spent at University.
What are your plans for the future?
James: I think that I still have a good deal to learn from this time at BitPay, but I do intend to build a company of my own in the future. This experience has shown me my own ability to take on the challenge of working in a startup. Why not start one?
Mitch: My plans immediately are to continue selling at Advantage Media Group in Charleston. I’ve begun a side project recently with a return to selling real estate. The knowledge I’ve gained in prospecting, lead generation, marketing and sales have equipped me with the knowledge to be extremely successful in a booming housing market. Over the next couple years, I imagine I’ll focus on these two ventures. I’m extraordinarily happy with my status quo.
James: This experience has changed me fundamentally. I see the world and my place in it differently now. I feel far freer to learn and live independently and far more curious and adventurous in how I approach everything from work to relationships.
Mitch: Praxis is easily one of the best decisions I’ve made for personal development and career advancement in my short life. I’ve gained incredible insight into how to build a business from the ground up. Someone should choose Praxis if they are the type of person who desires living a life on his or her own terms.
