All About Praxis Wednesdays
Most followers and fans of Praxis know we’re an apprenticeship program that offers our participants the opportunity to work with growing startups and leading professionals. Instead of centering the education experience around classroom activities, we help participants develop useful skills by placing them in a context where they’re challenged to create value for real customers in the marketplace.
We don’t believe real world experience comes at the expense of a rich intellectual life. Interacting with business leaders, debating philosophical ideas with thinkers from various disciplines, discussing apprenticeship experiences with peers, and participating in skills workshops that help you take your professional game to the next level is a critically important part of the learning experience.
In addition to an online curriculum where participants can engage in the study of history, economics, philosophy, technology, and entrepreneurship, our participants and graduates regularly take part in a series of workshops, fireside chats, breakout sessions, and group coaching calls.
This series of sessions is what we call Praxis Wednesdays.
Every Wednesday from 8pm-9:30pm EST, all Praxis participants come together for a video group session with a different theme each week.
Here’s a breakdown of what Praxis Wednesdays look like from week to week:
1st Week of the Month: The Monthly Kickoff
Throughout the program, participants complete various professional development projects based on the themes and topics covered in their monthly curriculum modules. At the start of each month, participants attend a group session that’s exclusively designed for the specific module they’re working on for that month. If you’re in the second month of the program, you join a special session just for all the people who are in the second month. If you’re in the third month of the program, you join a special session just for all the people in the third month. And so on.
During the monthly kickoff session, a Praxis advisor walks through the curriculum portal and gives an overview of all the activities and deliverables required for that month. The advisor provides tips on how to get the most out of that month’s module. Participants share questions and ideas, and map out how to best use the module to make progress toward their individual goals.
2nd Week of the Month: Philosophy Night
There’s far more to professional development than reading books on entrepreneurship, creativity, and self-improvement. In order to innovate and create value in the marketplace, successful professionals must learn how to question their own assumptions, integrate insights from other disciplines, empathize with different ways of thinking, and sell their own points of view with well-formed arguments. Philosophy night is when we dive in to the deep end.
Each philosophy session is led by a Praxis advisor or a special guest who presents on a specific topic, provides suggested readings related to the presentation, and challenges the participants to discuss and defend their own ideas during the session. The subjects covered during philosophy night include politics, ethics, future studies, economics, religion, philosophy of science, logic, current events, and much more.
Regardless of the topics discussed, the main goal of philosophy night is to help participants improve their ability to think critically and communicate intelligently about big ideas across various disciplines. It’s a brain workout, and it’s a blast!
3rd Week of the Month: Skills Workshop
In addition to interacting with established professionals during their 1-on-1 advising sessions and their apprenticeship experience, Praxis creates regular opportunities for participants to network with and learn from a diverse range of startup founders, entrepreneurs, and business leaders who have demonstrated the knowledge of what it takes to succeed in the professional world.
On the 3rd week of every month, Praxis brings in a special guest who shares their personal story and shows participants how to build the skills that will give them a competitive edge in the marketplace. These sessions do more than just motivate participants to work hard and feel inspired. They show participants how to get better at knowing what their employers want and knowing how to make themselves indispensable in any context.
4th Week of the Month: The Monthly Wrap-up
In addition to daily interaction in our Facebook Workplace group, we conclude every month with a highly participatory group discussion where we use a combination of breakout sessions to get participants discussing their program goals, their results from the last month, and their plans for the coming month.
During these sessions, participants break up into smaller groups to discuss their accomplishments and struggles from the past month and their goals and concerns for the upcoming month.
We conclude our monthly wrap-up with a “hot seat” exercise, where 2-3 participants volunteer to get in the hot seat and share a goal or creative challenge. Our Education Director and Praxis advisors help those participants get to the bottom of their issue and formulate a plan of action for moving forward. These hot seat session allow participants to not only get perspective on their own problems, but to also learn from other people’s challenges as well.
Participants know that every Wednesday, same time, same place, they’re got to come ready. We kick off each week by sharing a promotional video highlighting the guest and theme for the upcoming Wednesday.
These weekly sessions are an essential part of the program experience and we expect our participants to be proactive in their attendance and engagement. Just as the apprenticeship separates Praxis from an online school or university, Praxis Wednesdays sets the apprenticeship apart from only learning how to create value on the job. Praxis Wednesdays is more than a hangout session or an online lecture. It’s a time for program participants and graduates to connect, collaborate, and be challenged to become better versions of themselves.
The Praxis community is a growing and diverse group of ambitious young professionals, experienced advisors, business partners, and thought leaders. Every week we leverage this dynamic community to enhance the education experience and expand the individual network of each of our participants.
If this sounds like the kind of community you’d be excited to be part of, apply here.
