Our business network is an important part of what makes the Praxis experience valuable for both entrepreneurs and the aspiring entrepreneurial employees in the program. Many of our business partners have their own approaches to creating value, treating customers, and engaging employees that set them apart and provide valuable workplace experiences for the young people working with them.
ADS Security meets all of these criteria, which is why we were excited to help place our Winter 2015 class participant Imani Watson with the company. Imani has spent her time with ADS Security developing the company’s security software and interacting often with the company’s CEO John Cerasuolo.
Cerasuolo was recently interviewed by the Scarlett Leadership Institute on his own approach to leadership. He had this to say about the interview and about the culture he has helped to develop in his company:
“One of the important observations from the interview is that everyone at ADS Security is a leader regardless of their role.”
Here are a few more highlights from the discussion about building a personal and public reputation for leadership, responding to failure, and empowering followers to become leaders themselves:
“Too often, leaders are so good at making decisions — that’s generally why they get to be in leadership positions — that it’s too hard to hold yourself back when you know the right answer. Often, that’s the right thing to do. Because if you don’t, you end up developing a team around you that always looks to you. Then, the one time you’re not there, they don’t know what to do.”
“. . . [N]ever put yourself in a situation where everyone around you agrees with everything you say and do. If that’s the case, you are on your way to a major, major disaster.”
“. . . [T]he first thing you say to someone who gives you news that you were not really expecting and maybe didn’t want to hear is ‘Thank you.’”
