Our participants have interesting stories on what lead them to Praxis. Hear from them in their own words.
I am an artist. That could be the beginning, middle, and ending of my story.
I’ve been creating ever since I could hold a crayon. My mom and I like to joke about the different “phases” of art I went through. When I was six years old I discovered that hair flies backward when people run, so there are entire sketchbooks of girls running from page to page with their braids sprawled out behind them. I didn’t just enjoy art, art became an essential part of my daily life.
Growing up, I spent hours upon hours drawing and painting every day. I was able to do so because I was homeschooled from kindergarten through 7th grade. I owe everything I am to homeschooling. It allowed me to spend time developing my interests and passions, and I truly don’t know where I would be or what I would be doing if it weren’t for the first 8 years of my education.
I’d like to think I’ve had the perfect, beautiful mess of an education – eight years homeschooling, two at a performing arts charter school, one in cyber school, and my last two in public school. I got to experience almost every educational environment you can think of, and as a result, I’ve decided I’ve had enough. When I began my business, Hannah Phillips Media, in 10th grade, I knew there was no way I could spend another 4 years in school. I was ready to work.
My senior year of high school I was the busiest I’d ever been. I was growing HP Media and held 4 part-time jobs. It’s funny though, most days during my junior year when I got home from school, all I wanted to do was nap. But when I began working like a madwoman, I became much more energized. School literally drained me, and if it weren’t for all of my jobs I would’ve had a miserable senior year.
I am a person that genuinely enjoys working – whether it’s waiting tables or editing a shoot, I just like to work. Running my business has been my most enjoyable challenge yet. HP Media offers photography, videography, graphic design, and visual art services. Basically all of my passions bundled into one huge ball of awesome. I am continuously looking to expand HP Media, seeking out new opportunities and sometimes (okay, most of the time) creating my own.
I am passionate about art, sure, but I am just as passionate about entrepreneurship, business, and going against the grain. Praxis fits perfectly into my entrepreneurial mindset – it will allow me to gain real-world business experience while giving me the tools I need to grow my own business. I couldn’t be more excited for the journey ahead, and I truly feel like this is just the very beginning of my story.
