When I decided to join Praxis, I had one request: to stay in my current location.
Why would I want to stay put when there were amazing startups and business partners all over the country?
I could blame my bank account, but the real culprit was probably my comfort. Having already lived away from home twice, I was tired of making new friends and learning a new city. But now, four months into the program and having some time to look back, there is a part of me that wishes I had moved away, even just for the 10 month duration of the program. It’s not that I do not love the business partner I found — but, there are certain advantages to moving away for this experience that you can’t get when staying home.
Get out of your comfort zone.
Driving you to get out of your comfort zone is part of the Praxis experience. By staying home and living near family, friends, and all things familiar, you fail to get completely out of your element. Making a move to a different location (perhaps to one you’ve never even been to) can force us to look at the world differently, adapt to it, and change for the better.
Take advantage of new connections.
Having already built up a small network in my hometown, I hated to “start over”. In reality, though, with the internet keeping everyone connected, we have a unique opportunity to hold onto the networks we have while making new ones. We do not have to stay in the same city to have associates and acquaintances there.
Connect to the right partner.
The Praxis team works tirelessly to connect participants to a business that will make the experience amazing. Matching up with a business partner where the participant already has interest and skills will make the 10 months more meaningful and productive for both the business and the participant. Staying home, my options were limited from hundreds of partners to none. Praxis had zero business partners in my city before my class began so instead of exploring the entire Praxis network for a match, we had to search around my city just to find one partner. Moral of this story: embrace the Praxis network and be willing to seek out the best partner for you, no matter the location.
Don’t move to a new place just for the sake of a change in scenery. However, when looking at all of the advantages, I definitely recommend it for most people, especially Praxis participants. The timing may not seem right, the money may look thin, but really consider making it work. It could change your life.
You have to jump in with both feet. Trust the Praxis team to connect you to an incredible business partner, even if that partner is across the country. I have serious doubts you will regret the change.
