“What’s the best way to find great companies to work for in a new city if they aren’t currently hiring?”
This is a great question answered on a recent episode of Office Hours.
Many great jobs aren’t publicly advertised. But how do you find and tap into those opportunities? Here are a few tips.
1. Get on the scene.
Don’t sit on the sidelines. Go find people that are cool. Take them out for coffee. If you meet someone and hear that they work for a cool company, buy them lunch. Go to events where you can meet different people. Start talking to as many people as possible on the local scene that are working in and around the types of companies you think are interesting and ask them questions.
2. Be a customer and be a fan.
Find companies that you think are cool and buy their product if you’re able to. Go create a fan group for them on Facebook. Start creating value for them as a fan and as a follower as a customer. Do free work for them. An example of this could be to send them an infographic you made, let them know that you are a big fan of their company, and that you could do more of them if they want.
3. Do stuff.
The best way to make people want to connect with you, talk with you, and work with you is to be the kind of person that is doing something others want to be involved with.
Have something in particular that you are good at and a brand that demonstrates it. Imagine you have connected with someone in a cool company and they ask you ‘What do you do?’ Maybe your answer is graphic design or maybe it’s sales. Whatever it is, they aren’t going to be interested if all you have is talk. They aren’t going to take you seriously. Be able to substantiate your claim by pointing to your work in the real world. It doesn’t matter who you did the work for or even if you got paid for it. What matters is that you did the work and that you did it well.
Start where you are right now and start doing the types of things you would like to do for these companies. In the connected world we live in, it’s difficult to keep your work a secret if you are consistently showing up and documenting your work.
Instead of focusing on finding cool companies to work for, make sure you are living your life in such a way that when those cool companies find out about you, you are the kind of person they want to work with.
