Education isn’t all about studying facts in a certain order to answer on a multiple choice quiz that you’ll be graded on. Learning isn’t about doing something that’s boring just so you can receive society’s stamp of approval. It’s about extrapolating information from the world around you in a way that’s valuable to you in the moment that you need it. It’s also about combining seemingly unrelated points into meaningful, big ideas!

That’s why here at Praxis, we love drawing career lessons for our participants from modern pop culture and other avenues that most people decry as a waste of time. Fun fact: Education Director T.K. Coleman challenged himself to make a Twilight Zone reference in every speech he makes in 2019. So far, he’s done it! 😉

But I didn’t say all that for kicks. That’s why I’m going to let you in on our favorite interview scenes from movies. Then I’ll share a lesson from each scene that you can keep in mind for your future interviews.

Good Will Hunting

Lesson: Don’t be afraid to negotiate.

Office Space

Lesson: Show your work. Don’t let it get to the point where people question your whether you create value or not.

Mrs. Doubtfire

Lesson: An interview isn’t about you. It’s about a problem you can solve for a company.

Friends

Lesson: Your interviewer is a person too! Knowing this can be the difference between landing the job or losing it.

The Internship

Lesson: Don’t talk too much.

Tommy Boy

Lesson: Don’t get carried away when talking about your weaknesses. Instead, make it clear that you have the ability to turn them into strengths!

Suits

Lesson: Demonstrate your value creation potential. That’s all a hiring manager wants to see.

Now let me ask you a question: isn’t this type of learning much more philosophically challenging and inspiring? If you’re tired of educating yourself by checking boxes, Praxis might be for you. Here, you’ll get real-world experience and a higher education experience that’s tailored to your personal goals and interests. It’s going to push you to your limits, but if that excites you rather than scares you, don’t wait to apply to Praxis!
