Praxis has been featured on the Legends and Losers podcast several times. Here’s the most recent episode where Christopher Lochhead and Isaac Morehouse discuss building a digital body of work. We were joined by Lochhead on our latest Praxis Wednesday call, where participants grilled him with questions about how to become legendary.

“Be very good at something that not many people are good at that delivers a tremendous amount of value to a lot of people. You’re looking at that gap.” -Christopher Lochhead

Here is Praxis participant Hailey Pratt’s take on the call and on Lochhead’s new book, Niche Down:

Wow.

I just had the most amazing opportunity! I had the privilege of talking to one of the authors of the book Niche Down: How to Become Legendary by Being Different. His name is Christopher Lochhead and he is not just an author. He is a podcaster, entrepreneur, surfer, and some may say the “godfather of category design”.

So… he is kind of a big deal.

In Niche Down, he writes about how to find your niche and stick with it. There is a huge theme within the book that being different is much more interesting than being better at something. I have learned so much through the time I read that book, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to be different and unique in their career.
Here are some of the many things I took away from Chris, Niche Down, and his insights on the questions he answered:

  1. It is the people who are different who make the difference.
  2. “The game of better is much less exciting than the game of different.” -Lochhead

  3. Do not try to brand your product (whatever that may be) as something that is “better” than another thing in that category.
  4. Be different, not better.

  5. Sometimes, God will be tapping you on the shoulder when you are looking in one direction and say “Hey! look over there at that problem and find a different solution!”
  6. This is being open to serendipity. Being open to look that other direction and look at things in a new light. That is when you truly become different.

  7. You are not in this alone, other people make you successful and give you opportunities.
  8. Cultivate relationships on purpose.
Build legendary relationships within Praxis and this amazing community we have. We will likely have these relationships for the rest of our working lives and more. The participants in Praxis are badasses and will help you achieve your goals if you help them achieve theirs!

  9. Success is failing in the right direction.
  10. “Fall in love with the question, not the solution.”-Lochhead

  11. How will I differentiate myself as an apprentice? (when I get to that point in the program)
  12. Become the most legendary apprentice your business partner (BP) has ever seen.
Straight up ask your BP, “If I were to be the most legendary apprentice, what would I do? How can I blow you away?” and then do that but x2!

  13. Read a lot.
  14. Immerse yourself in whatever it is you are learning about. Make yourself smart, there is no reason to be dumb nowadays.

  15. 8.Trust your instincts.
  16. “You often hear this dumbass advice about following your passion. We don’t do that. You’ll follow it right off a cliff. Follow your DIFFERENT.” -Lochhead

I am so grateful to have been able to talk to such a legendary guy and be in the call where we got to hear one on one insights into how Chris sees the world. I think the word legend will be a huge part of my vocabulary now, just because it is such a cool way of looking at things. Last night, I was so excited about moving forward. I can not believe that I get to be a part of the Praxis community and be able to meet such smart, challenging, intellectual people!
I think I am going in the right direction this time, even if I don’t fully know where it is taking me. But I am not complaining.
