Starting the day off with a productive vibe can be key to setting the tone for the rest of the morning. There are plenty of ways you can start the day productively — going to the gym, pounding through work emails, and going for a jog are some cliched examples — but there are also little things you can do to streamline your day and to give yourself a feeling of accomplishment before getting in the shower.
1. Make Your Bed
It may sound a bit schmaltzy, but making your bed as soon as you get out of it can be a great way to give yourself a feeling of accomplishment early in the morning. This way, your bed is not only clean and tidy — not imposing itself in the back of your mind as something to be cleaned later — but it is something that, upon completion, shows real, substantive results, however small.
2. Set Your Coffeemaker The Night Before
Most modern coffeemakers come with an internal clock and a feature that allows you to schedule a brew. If you get up at 6 AM, you can set your coffeemaker to start brewing at 5:45. You can not only wake up to not having to put coffee together, but you’ll get the aroma of freshly brewed coffee with your alarm. You’ll just have to fill up the reservoir and put some fresh grounds in the night before, or else you’ll just have a very hot empty pot in the morning.
3. Sleep With The Blinds Open
Natural light is one of the best ways to wake up feeling rested. Waking up to natural light helps balance your body’s melatonin levels, and pushes your brain into the “day” mindset, rather than the “night” mindset. If you have the luxury to wake up after dawn, try to leave a set of blinds open the night before!
Using these three minor tips the night before and the morning of can help make the difference between a day started on the right foot and a day struggling to be productive. As always, if you can get to the gym, go for a run, or get work done immediately after waking up, do those!
